I love the adventure of digging through old newspapers in all their forms, past, present and future, so try always to give myself some free time to just wander around newspapers.com without any real goal or focus. That said, I have gained some discipline when I'm actually researching a topic or person, and also a system that, although rudimentary, works for me. Thanks for a fun piece!

Giggling from start to finish with this piece! Loved how you illustrated your use of the database in the "old days" and the overwhelming flood of new data threatening to drown us dogged researchers.

Very true, too much information! I tend to make a list before I start, to remind me what it is I’m actually looking for and not to go off at too many tangents. But sometimes the offshoots are what sparks inspiration.

Like the timing idea. I don’t feel I’m very good at researching topics.

Hi Jacqui. I'm curious why you don't feel you're very good at research. Can you tell me more about it? I'm thinking of starting a Q&A column at Rooting Around. Thanks!

I think because I’m not so good at recording and organizing what I’ve found. Open tabs all over my computer 😳
