I never make any secret of my great distaste for the holiday season. My husband laughs at my trigger finger to switch stations whenever one of several internet classical radio streams that’s always playing in the background starts in with some joyous Xmas song. And as the days edge closer to the Actual Day Itself, my trigger finger goes into overdrive and I put on a CD instead.
Bah humbug indeed. But it’s not a good place to dwell for long.
So when I pondered which song could pull me out and up from existential dread in the first five seconds, Waterloo by Abba immediately popped up. The song came out in February 1974 and back then it wasn’t cool to admit you liked Abba or Barry Manilow or disco for that matter.
But I loved them all, especially Waterloo, even though I had no idea what the song was about.
I think that it’s a particularly apropos Saturday Smile. Enjoy!
What song automatically cheers you up? Tell us in the comments below. Thanks!
My playlist is quite random. Abba is great; Manilow not. The lyrics to “Rudolph…” are fun for me, learned as a child… Christmas is just barely tolerated. Today at the exercise place a country song came into the earbuds, and I could not stop smiling: Hillbilly Bone, by Blake Shelton, first line: “I got a friend in New York City; ain’t never heard of Conway Twitty…” and…. i know not why, maybe it’s cognitive dissonance- ‘twas fabulous. Do you now watch some Jim & Tammy or Lawrence Welk just to soak up the oddness…?
